Slips and things.

Slips and things.

= The Scene
Star City Games Standard Open (Columbus)
HJ – Rob McKenzie
SK – Jared Sylva
Staff – Erik Aliff; Matthew Karr; Sam Robinson; (myself)
128 players (day 2); 6 rounds of swiss + cut to top 8
Note: Due to the 5-judge staff each judge was given tasks to take care of. In a sense we were all team leads with no team under us. I was in charge of Clock/EOR.

I always have a good time when I can head out to Columbus to judge some magic, and this event was no exception. I was joining the staff late, only being there for Sunday, but learned some things that I hope to cover ahead. I've decided to take a slightly different approach to this article. I'm going to discuss how we record penalties on the back of slips, and connect that to some things I actually saw happen at the event. I'm hoping that by doing so I will make this educational for some of the new lv1s in my area – as well as similar judges elsewhere.

So what do we put on the back of a slip when we have a penalty? Hopefully you are already familiar with acronym J-PIP? Standing for: Judge, Player, Infraction, Penalty – This mnemonic device gives us the information that needs to be on the back of a slip, and in the correct order. One thing that has been introduced at larger events, is that scorekeepers are now asking for the table number to be added to the beginning of this string. Although this is not particularly helpful for smaller local events using WER, it is extremely helpful for larger events.

The last thing we add to the back of the slip is a note about what happened to cause the penalty, and if appropriate what the fix was. Rob McKenzie told me to mind my ABCs in regards to this. ABC is another acronym standing in for Accurate, Brief, Clear. Whatever you write as your note it needs to be these things. Accurate and clear enough that another judge (the head judge and/or the scorekeeper usually) can understand what happened without having been there. Also brief – because you don't want your scorekeeper to write a small paragraph for each penalty.

Keeping these notes Accurate, Brief, and Clear is something of a balancing act that I will admit I had some difficulty with during this event. However now that we've covered these basics we can get to the interesting bits – situations. So I'm going to ask my lv1s to read this, and we're going to discuss what they would write on the back of the slips for these situations (if anything). Participation and commentary from the peanut gallery is encouraged!

=-=

1 You are watching a game and on A's end step, N casts collected company. A responds with Hallowed Moonlight. You then see N untap and draw for turn.

2 As you are called to a table N tells you that he just realized that he played a card face-down that does not have morph. Indeed there is only one face down card on his field a Duskwatch Recruiter. N also reveals his hand to you and you only see 1 card – Hidden Dragonslayer.

3 N calls you to the table in A's upkeep step. They have just realized that they failed to transform their Duskwatch Recruiter into Krallenhorde Howler on their last upkeep. Does your answer change if instead it's a Krallenhorde Howler transforming into Duskwatch Recruiter?

4 A says 'Combat' and N agrees. A then says 'Surrak haste' pointing to their Surrak, the Hunt Caller, and attempts to swing with the team. N stops them and calls you. The players agree that this is the first time the 'combat' shortcut has been used (or has been relevant) this match – and that they have not explicitly agreed to any specific treatment of it.

5 A casts read the bones. They proceed to take a card, add it to their hand. They then quickly put that card back, and then look at the top 2 cards of their deck before we are called to the table. During investigation we are able to determine that the first card did come together with the other cards in the hand. The current state is A has a hand of 5 cards. There is card1 'the card added to hand for a moment' and card2 'card looked at'.

=-= Answers

1; GPE-GRV Warning;  player failed to resolve collected company – after hallowed moonlight.

Hallowed moonlight doesn't actually counter Collected company. N should have looked at 6 cards (optionally) exiled up to 2 creatures, and put the rest on bottom – but he didn't. As for the fix a backup involves undoing N's draw step, and given that likely no cards are changing zones I'm more comfortable leaving the game state as is.

2; GPE-HCE Warning; played a card w/out morph face down. Only one morph card in hand.

This is slightly interesting because normally misplaying the morph ability upgrades HCE to a game loss. In this particular case we have all the elements we need to call in the HJ to confirm that it is not upgraded. We have the player calling it on themselves, almost immediately (they just played the card, passed turn, and caught it) and with only one morph card in hand.

3; GPE-MT Warning; did not transform Krallenhorde Howler.

Either way this is missed trigger, and we're asking the opponent if they want the trigger to be put on the stack. If caught during the draw step or later in the turn, we simply instruct the players to keep playing. The interesting bit here is when is there a penalty? Philosophically we look at a trigger in isolation to determine if it is 'usually detrimental' So we shouldn't consider the other abilities of the cards faces. Generally speaking however the 'night' side of most transform cards is stronger than the day side, and I feel this is true here because the creature transforms from a 2/2 into a 3/3. So day to night is not usually detrimental and is no penalty. Night to day however is 'usually detrimental'.

EDIT: Further consideration by Judges of Higher level and more experience than I have since declared all 'transform' type triggers not generally detrimental. As a result there is no penalty either way you flip it.

    4; N/A

Surrak has a trigger, and it's a trigger that targets. Also the default 'combat' shortcut offers to move to a point when N has priority in declare attackers. A trigger that requires targets becomes missed if targets are not selected when it goes on the stack, and Surrak's trigger does this at the beginning of combat. Since declare attackers step is definitely after beginning of combat step, this means no haste for A. Also we don't write anything on the back of this slip because Surrak's trigger is not usually detrimental, and therefore no penalties have to be issued (did I trick you?)

5 GPE-HCE Warning; Drew a card, put it back scry 2 off read the bones.

So when I established the fact that card1 touched the hand this put us firmly in Hidden Card Error territory. Since the players seemed to agree that card1 was the card added to hand I struggled for a bit with the fix (HCE has some layers to it). However ultimately I added card1 to the hand (making it 6 cards) – applying the 'Thoughtseize' fix to those six cards, allowing the opponent to shuffle away one of their choice, and then continuing with the resolution of Read the Bones with the 1 card remaining.

SCGIQ - Tarentum; Head Judge Report

Star City Games IQ – Tarentum
Head Judge Tournament Report
Competitive; Standard

For this particular event, I found myself wearing many hats. I was Judge Manager, and responsible for securing staff for the event. I was Head Judge, responsible for identifying tasks and goals, and delegating responsibilities. I was Scorekeeper, and had to keep track of the event as it progressed. I'm going to discuss various aspects of all of these roles.

    Cast:
Tournament Organizer: Jonathan Engel
Head Judge / Scorekeeper: Dan Regewitz (myself)
Floor Judge: Christopher Hartman
Floor Judge: Chelsea Hogan
55 awesome players.

= Preparation

I originally lined up this event with Jon after I had just completed a 50 player GPT with myself as the only judge. As that event was a little stressful for me personally I knew this event, we were going to need at least one other judge. Fortunately, we had a lot of time to consider what we needed to do and how for the event, as it took some time to get permission to run the event from the owner (this was the company's first SCG-IQ), as well as order and receive the tournament kit.

So as Judge manager, I created an event on Judge apps, made a call out for other judges, and had to turn at least one judge away entirely. This was all new to me, as I had never formally acted as a judge manager for a multi-judge event before. I knew that I needed some judges. As our planning continued, it became clear that my tournament role would mostly likely be scorekeeper AND head judge. So, I knew not to count myself for 'floor coverage'. Our estimated attendance was 30-60 players, which we did hit. So our target was 2 floor judges, with a third possibly on standby in case something crazy happened.

Overall I prepared well, even making notes for myself on what to cover in the pre-event judge meeting, and player meeting. I also took some steps that were clearly over-preparing. For example, I packed my own laptop and printer to the event – again just in case something catastrophic occurred.

= Score keeping

My experiences as Scorekeeper are perhaps the least exciting. As a local judge and TO, I have had close to 5 years of experience working with tournament software (first DCIR, now WER), and was fairly confident that I could score keep a competitive REL event. I vaguely recall a few moments where things were a little hectic, however barring a hiccup or two, the day was without severe incident.

Christopher showed me the wondrous multiprint feature, which I had not had the opportunity to use previously, and that certainly made things go smoothly.

I in turn, was able to show him the WER fixed seating workaround. For those unfamiliar with this, WER does not have a function where you can fix a player to a certain table number. However, you sometimes want to do this to make the day easier for people with crutches, or a cane, etc. The workaround involves pairing all matches randomly, finding the player whose seat you want to fix, and unpairing them. Then, you find and unpair the table you want to fix them to. Then you repair the 4 players correctly, in table order.

The only other scorekeeper note I have for this event, is one match where the players finished game 2 in turns, and were 1/1, but the slip was filled out 1/1/1. So in this case, no third game was played, and I took the liberty to fix the slip after clarifying the situation with Chelsea.

= Head Judge

As an experienced lv1, I have had my turn at being Head Judge in various situations. However, as luck or providence would have it, this was my first event as Head Judge where other judges were under my direction. This changes the focus of what I need to do and think about in terms of the event. In context, being head judge in such a situation is a lot more about defining tasks, giving instructions, and delegating responsibility.

In terms of defining tasks: It's pretty easy to identify the various pieces that go into running a successful event. The timely posting of pairings, the distribution of match-slips near the beginning of round, Deck checks, and the coverage of the floor throughout the event. It is quite another thing to meld these items into a cohesive whole. I found it helpful to imagine things as they would occur in an actual tournament environment, come up with a proper sequence, try to think about potential snag-points, and modify accordingly. Lastly, although you have this wonderful plan, don't be afraid to modify it based on what is actually going on in the live event.

Just as an example, I announced the start of the round, but was having difficulties projecting properly on the day. Thus some players had started their match and some had not. Chris re-announced the start of round more robustly, but because of the confusion included we skipped the beginning of round deck check for that round, pulling a mid-round instead.

Giving Instructions: So as head judge I had two sets of notes. One was information I was going to go over with the judges at our judge meeting. This largely included the tasks that identified, and the way in which I imagined them being executed. The other set of notes was for the player meeting, and included information for them: please check your deck lists for errors, what competitive REL means, and so forth. The point is that communication is a big piece of being head judge.

There are two instances where my communication to the players broke down a bit. The first is I simply had issues projecting. This is an issue I had throughout the day, though my end-of-round announcements went smoothly. I am simply accustomed to being a quiet speaker, and need more practice making these sorts of announcements.

I had planned to make an announcement going into the final rounds of the event with an instruction that players should be playing magic, or shaking hands, and not improperly determining winner, or attempting bribery. This announcement was unintentionally skipped due to other issues that had to be dealt with – a direct result of my multiple tournament roles.

= Other notes

On the day, I was called in on an appeal twice. The first case involved a player who called judge upon discovering their opponent counting 59 card main deck, 16 card sideboard, in between games 1 and 2. Christopher was the responding judge. It was his ruling that as we are currently between games, no penalty is issued. This ruling was upheld.

The other case involved Player N cast Magma Jet targeting Prognostic Sphinx. Player A discarded a card to give the Sphinx Hexproof. Chelsea was the responding judge. It was her ruling that the spell will resolve and do as much as possible, allowing Player N to scry 2. This was overturned. As Magma jet goes to resolve, we check to see if the target is legal, and it is not because of hexproof. As a result the spell is countered by the game rules and none of it's effects occur (CR 602.8b).

A small hiccup occurred in logistics. A player asked me as were entering round 4 (of 6) if standings had been posted at all. They had not, and I did want to post standings at the end of round 3, as that was the half-way point for the event. I thanked the player and made a note to post standings end of round 4. Standings were posted, but then I quickly forgot to pair round 5 before printing pairings and match-slips. This resulted in duplicate pairings, which we had to quickly retract. Fortunately I caught the error quickly.

SCG Open Pitt - Part 2

= SCG Open Pitt - part 2: Deck checks

As part of my staff duties at Star City Games open in Pittsburgh, I was on the deck checks team.

Deck checks are a feature of just about every competitive or professional magic event run. At the start of the event, all players are seated and decklists are collected. Tables are then randomly selected to be checked.

The reason judges perform deck checks is to maintain the integrity of the event, by making sure that players are on the level with what deck they run, and how they run it.

The tables that are targeted for deck checks are selected at random by the scorekeeper (there is a function for selecting a random table in wizard event reporter). However their is a clear preference among judges to target the lower table numbers. Thus it is often good practice for the scorekeeper to generate a list of possible tables, and let the judge staff target one or two from that list.

After you know what table your after, you head out onto the floor, identify the table your going to hit with a deck check, and keep an eye on it. The common practice is to hover near, but not at, the targeted table. My personal preference and comfort zone is 3-4 paces away. As a judge you want to "swoop" in and stop the players at the moment that the players present their deck to their opponent. By presenting the player is making an implied statement that their deck is legal, randomized, and matches the list they submitted to the tournament staff. Also make a note of the time as you interrupt the game.

In a large tournament situation such as the SCG-open, deck-check judges go out in pairs. While one judge swoops, the other is guard. The guard's role is to field any judge calls at the beginning of the round, especially tardiness calls, so that their counterpart can swoop uninterrupted. The extra judge also can act as a 'decoy' for the actual swooping judge. Plus, it's always useful to have another set of eyes and ears on the floor.

So the two decks are brought back to the area set aside for deck checks. Lists have to be pulled from the file (hopefully before actual decks were grabbed). Then you check the deck. When checking the deck there are a few things Judges look for. (1) If the decks were grabbed at the right moment, look at the top 10 or so cards, looking for patterns, outstanding hands, or other signs that the deck may have been stacked or improperly shuffled. (2) Look at the sleeves, checking for miscut sleeves, discolored sleeves, or any other telling marks that could be interpreted as marked cards. (3) Check the contents of the deck against the decklist looking for any disagreement or mismatch.

If any problems are found, it's the judge's responsibility to call the player aside, inform them of the problem, and get it fixed. In most cases this will involve handing out a penalty when a problem exists. Guidelines for fixing and penalties for various situations are given in the official penalty guidelines so I won't waste time to repeat them here.

Once everything is set, you allow the players to return to their match. A time extension is given to the players. At the SCG open we tracked time extensions by writing them on the front of the slip and also writing them on a clipboard by the scorekeeper. The typical time extension given is the amount of time it took from when a judge took the decks, to when the decks were returned to the players, plus 3 minutes.

Running a Magic Game Day.

= Running a Magic Game Day.
= March 7th, 2011

Late on a Friday night, after the FNM was well done and over with, I became suddenly and violently ill. I'll spare you the horrid details but I definitely had a spat with the flu, and it attacked me suddenly and without warning.

This posed a serious problem, because tomorrow, Saturday, was Besieged game day. I knew then that I would not be fit to run any event, but calling anyone would do no good at such a late hour. So I grabbed some much needed sleep, but set my alarm for 8:00 so I could inform my coworkers of my state.

I put the decision of whether or not to actually run the event up to Ken, my immediate supervisor. He was willing to run the event, but needed detailed specific instructions of how to go about it.

What follows is a copy of the e-mail I then composed to Ken. I am posting it here in hopes that it may help some other organizer planning for their first game day, or training a co-worker to run a game day in the event of an sudden and unexpected absence. A slight disclaimer: Some features of this document such as cost to enter, prize payout, the ability of players to "Choose a faction" and get a promo based on that choice will not be the same for all game days or all locations.

"...
Subject: RE: Urgent: Game Day

You need to:

(1) Begin the tournament.
(a) Open the Game day event in WER, from the list of sanctioned events, should be sorted by date.
(b) Enter the players into the event. If you need new DCI cards they are in my box.
(c) Make sure everyone who payed are in the computer and vice-versa.
(d) Everyone who enters gets a "Treasure Mage" Promo out of my box. (Try and save me at least 4).
The Tournament will be 3 rounds with 8 players. 4 rounds with 9-16, and 5 with 17-32 (although I hope you don't get in that range).

(2) Each Round you..
(a) Pair players.
(b) Announce or post pairings so that Players can find their match.
(c) Keep score by entering results.
(d) Each round is 45 to 50 minutes in length. If all results are in before that time elapses, feel free to pair players for the next round.
(e) If you do go to time tell whomever is still playing "Active player finish your turn, you have 5 additional turns to finish this match."
(f) A game that goes to time with no winner is recorded as a draw.

(g) At the end of regular swiss rounds, print up a copy of "Standings" and allow the players to review it.
(h) Assuming no player has any issues with how the standings turned up, you proceed to ...

(3) The Cut
(a) With 8 players you play three rounds and your done (see ending the tournament).
(b) With 9-16 players you play four rounds, then start single-elimination rounds, cutting to top 4.
(c) With 17+ players you play five round, then start single-elimination rounds, cutting to top 8.
(d) Single elimination rounds work like regular rounds, except players are dropped from the tournament after a loss.
(e) After the single-elimination rounds are complete you can ...

(4) Ending the Tournment
(a) Print up the standings again.
(b) The Top 8 players all receive the "Black Sun's Zenith" extended art foil promo in my box.
(c) The top 2 players with Phyrexian - aligned decks get a copy of the Suture Priest card.
(d) The top 2 players with Mirran - aligned decks get a copy of Pristine Talisman card.
(e) I expect that you'll have to question the players about who has an "aligned" deck. If someone is unclear on what that means it's...
(f) At least 10 cards of your chosen faction in your main deck. No cards of opposing faction in main deck or sideboard.'

(5) Handing out Prizes.
(a) Each player who enters adds 3 booster packs to the prize pool.
(b) Figure out what the prize payout will be shortly after you know how many players are in the event.
(c) Prizes scale, and get paid out to 1/2 the player base (4th place with 8 people).

Examples:
8 Players; 24 total Packs; 12/ 7/ 3/ 2
12 Players; 36 Total Packs; 15/ 9/ 4/ 4/ 2/ 2
16 Players; 48 Total Packs; 16/ 12/ 6/ 4/ 3/ 3/ 2/ 2

(6) Dealing with the unforseen.
(a) Chances are somebody (or two) is going to complain about something simply because I'm not there. My advice is to listen to their concerns, tell them your doing the best you can, and if you think it's serious you can call to consult me on it.

If you have any specific questions, I'll try to help as best I can.

- Cheers,
- Dan R.

Revised events for September

=Revised events for September
=Thurs, September 2nd, 2010

The following Change is being made to my planned events for the month of September:

The FNM scheduled for Friday, Sept. 24th is changed to "FNM for FtV". Expect your regular standard constructed FNM, but the cost to enter has been raised to $10, and we have a sealed box of From the Vault: Relics to give away. This represents the last FNM where Shards block will be legal, so I wanted to end with a bang!

The following event is being ADDED to the planned events for the month of September:

Tuesday, 14th - 5:00-9:00. Elder Dragon Highlander tournament! Yes, I am offering prizes to play in what is perhaps the most awesome casual format to ever exist. 100 card singleton decks including a general. Constructed decks must be Legacy legal.
We will be using a 'Diplomacy' based VP system where players will score VP for both defeating opponents and by vote. The player with the highest VP score will be declared winner.

For information about this awesome format please consult http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php
