Scars of Mirrodon Game Day Report

=== Overview

Scars of Mirrodin represented the second Game Day I've proudly hosted. Sadly, the turnout was significantly smaller than last time around. Eight players showed up to play. Thus it was announced that not only would all participants recieve an extra extended-art Memnite promo, but that everyone would also walk away with a foil extended-art Tempered Steel. The event was to contain 3 swiss rounds, with no cut.

=== Decklists

Scars of Mirrodin allowed players to "align" or "affiliate" their decks with either the Mirran or Phyrexian factions. Players could do this by running at least 10 scars of mirrodin cards with the appropriate watermark in their maindecks, and no cards of the opposing faction in either maindeck or sideboard. A total of four promos could be handed out to players who affiliated their decks. Players who played for Mirrodin could receive a Peace Strider card, and Phyrexian players could receive a Pierce Strider card.

NDC Butler now on facebook.

New Dimension Comics in Butler now has it's own facebook page. This is a great way for our local player base to stay connected to our event schedule.

It's still in the process of being set up, so I'll continue to maintain events through this site for the near future. The goal however is to make Facebook the more complete and more accurate source for event information - which means I have an opportunity to slowly phase this blog into new territory.

Like my next post... as an example.

Revised events for September

=Thurs, September 2nd, 2010

The following Change is being made to my planned events for the month of September:

The FNM scheduled for Friday, Sept. 24th is changed to "FNM for FtV". Expect your regular standard constructed FNM, but the cost to enter has been raised to $10, and we have a sealed box of From the Vault: Relics to give away. This represents the last FNM where Shards block will be legal, so I wanted to end with a bang!

The following event is being ADDED to the planned events for the month of September:

Tuesday, 14th - 5:00-9:00. Elder Dragon Highlander tournament! Yes, I am offering prizes to play in what is perhaps the most awesome casual format to ever exist. 100 card singleton decks including a general. Constructed decks must be Legacy legal.
We will be using a 'Diplomacy' based VP system where players will score VP for both defeating opponents and by vote. The player with the highest VP score will be declared winner.

For information about this awesome format please consult http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php

Grand Prix Trial - Columbus

== Grand Prix Trial - Columbus
== Sat June 19th, 2010

This past weekend I had a great opportunity to judge a Grand Prix Trial for GP - columbus (taking place July 30th - Aug 1st). Not only did I get the chance to judge, but I was given the honor, privilege, and challenge of being head judge for this event.

I arrived on site about 10:30, and supplied the TO with deck lists for players to fill out. Players were already on site when I arrived. It took me a bit to get organized, but after setting up I was able to talk to the TO about how the day would run. The available staff was most experienced using WER, so that was the software we used for this event.

We waited until 1:10 to allow more players time to show up, but in the end we started the tournament with only 11 players. The TO made several announcements as well as I. We would be having 4 rounds of swiss, with a cut to top 4.

= Round 1

During this round I inspected deck-lists, counting cards in main and sideboards.

Player A called me to the table. Apparently a card from his opponent's (player B) deck had fallen to the floor. Player A could not identify what zone the card had been in. Player B reported that the card had been in their graveyard. Upon reviewing information available, I determined that the card had been in graveyard.

Player C called me to the table. Several creatures were engaged in combat, and a bridge from below was in Player C's graveyard. The opponent (player D) obviously wanted to see bridge exiled before it could create some 2/2 zombie tokens. I had the players resolve combat damage, then asked Player C about Bridge's triggered abilities. Player C successfully ordered his abilities to his advantage, and got zombie tokens.

= Round 2

As round 2 started, I had one sideboard error to fix. A player had 17 cards registered in his sideboard. Upon checking the deck, we only found 15 sideboard cards. I changed the deck list to match the deck, and brought him back to his game with a game-loss.

As it happens there was a related question regarding the procedure of shuffling. The WPN did make changes to this policy back in April. At the beginning of the match a player shuffles/randomizes their own deck, and presents it to their opponent. The opponent then may perform additional shuffling. The owner of the deck does not make a final cut.

== Round 3

Player A had cast Reanimate targeting Iona, shield of Emeria. Player B had discarded Faire Macabre to Exile the targeted Iona and another card from the graveyard. I was asked what happens to the Reanimate. As a spell with no legal target, the Reanimate was simply countered on resolution.

Player C had a Pithing needle on the table naming putrid imp. Player D had a putrid Imp on the table and cast Chain of Vapor targeting Pithing Needle. Player C wanted to sacrifice a land to copy the Chain and target Putrid Imp, but there was some confusion about exactly how/when he could perform this action. I took a moment to consult the The Oracle text on Chain (just to make sure they hadn't clarified it), but eventually had to interpret the card as written. The Pithing needle is bounced, and the copy of Chain is created on the stack both as part of the resolution of the spell.

== Round 4

I had sat to watch a game when first Turn player A tapped a single land, and proceeded to put engineered explosives on the table, but quickly yanked it back. The player then turned to me and announced that was not the play he intended, but rather this card Important facts: The player never announced he was casting explosives, or really said anything at all before revealing it. Explosives was certainly revealed to the opponent. The card did touch the table, but at no time were any counters put onto it, nor did it it physically leave the player's hand. I ruled that the explosives had not been played, but rather simply revealed (and unintentionally at that).

== Single Elimination Rounds

Kevin Leandski running Lorescale Coatl simply scooped to Stu Somers running Reanimate. In the other match I watched as Travis Morton running Dredge got bad draws against Timothy Babcock's Zoo.

The final match was played to three games. Both players played well and hard. Except for a minor bookkeeping error concerning life totals, I did not have to interceded.

Timothy Babcock was awarded 1st place, and 3 round byes to GP-Columbus. The TO also had an artist signed mana drain which was also awarded to first place (picture below).

Of particular interest to the Eternal format crowd is that there will be a Grand Prix in Colombus for the Legacy format. Preceeding this event will be no less than 3 local Trials that will offer automatic byes in that event as well as other prizes.

I will be attending as a judge the Grand Prix trial to be held at New Dimention Comics at Century 3 on June 19th. Registration starts at 12:00 noon, and entry will be $25.00. I encourage any who are interested to contact the venue for more information.

= Myojin of Life's Web and Sudden Spoiling

= Myojin of Life's Web and Sudden Spoiling
= Friday, April 30th 2010

The following occurred in a casual Elder Dragon Highlander game with 4 players. At that time I made a rules call concerning this interaction that was incorrect. Here is the correct call.

Situation:
Player A has a Myojin of Life's Web in play with a divinity counter on it. They choose to attack Player B. Player B casts Sudden Spoiling.

Question:
Does Myojin manage to keep indestructable?

Answer:
No.

Reasoning:
The text "Myojin of Life's Web is indestructible as long as it has a divinity counter on it." is an ability, and thus Myojin does not have it when Sudden Spoiling resovles. Although the divinity counter does remain on the creature - it has no function.

Reference:
CR 112.11. An effect that sets an object’s characteristic, or simply states a quality of that object, is different from an ability granted by an effect. When an object “gains” or “has” an ability, that ability can be removed by another effect. If an effect defines a characteristic of the object (“[permanent] is [characteristic value]”), it’s not granting an ability. (See rule 604.3.) Similarly, if an effect states a quality of that object (“[permanent]” is indestructible” or “[creature] is unblockable,” for example), it’s neither granting an ability nor setting a characteristic. (See rules 700.4 and 700.5.)

700.4a Although the text “[This permanent] is indestructible” is an ability, actually being indestructible is neither an ability nor a characteristic. It’s just something that’s true about a permanent.

Card Text:

MtG: Worldwake Pre-release

= MtG: Worldwake Pre-release
= Sunday, January 31st.

Due to my work and tournament responsibilities I don't often manage to get away from my home shop. However, I had the opportunity to attend and participate as a player in a pre-release down in Tarentum.

My sealed deck pool was actually quite strong. I opened 2 marsh casualties (one foil), and a chain reaction for some solid board-sweeping. I also opened 2 decent bomb rares: Obnix the fallen and Kazuul, Tyrant. Obviously I built my deck black/red. However my tournament performance was lack-luster. I went 1/2- drop. Primarily due to a lack of single-target removal and some land issues in two games.

For the draft, I opted to draft in opposite colors blue/white. However I missed some picks because I was passed Butcher of Malakir, Anowon, the Ruin Sage, and a Chain Reaction. Three cards, which despite being outside of my colors I could not pass up. I promptly hate-drafted all three. I did however pull some strong removal in white, and some decent beaters in blue, but I bowed out of the draft at 1-1 because I lacked a strong early game.

Coming home at about 6:00, I realized that in the last 48 hours, I had participated in nearly 20 hours of magic. While the experience was fun, exciting, and exhilarating - it was not one I plan on repeating every weekend!

MtG: Worldwake Pre-release.

= MtG: Worldwake Pre-release.
= Saturday, January 30th.

Another set, another successful pre-release. Only 14 people were enrolled in the main event, which was a bit less than what I was expecting (20+). Still many packs were opened, games and cards were payed, and things went smoothly.

I had advertized a double-elimination draft. Strangely enough 16 people signed into the draft. There was a group who actually came up from Pittsburgh because the main event they attended didn't have enough product to support drafts. With 16 people, I obviously wanted to set up two full pods of 8. However DCI reporter didn't support draft pods with double-elimination - so I had to change the format of the draft to rounds of swiss. Fortunately there were no complaints.

Below are some collected pictures from throughout the day.

SWM: 150pt Option - "Legacy theme"

= SWM: 150pt Option - "Legacy Theme"
= Monday, January 4th.

This month's option play was a 150pt constructed. Only factions from the Legacy era were allowed - Meaning New republic, Empire, Vong, Sith, and of course Fringe. Players were allowed to mix factions to a certain extent such as mixing New Republic with Empire or Vong (but not all three), or Sith with Empire. Players were restricted from using certain unique characters that were not present during the Legacy era - the most obvious being the Emperor or Darth Vader in the empire faction.

Eight players showed up on a bad-weather day to participate in the event, and I commend everyone for braving and enduring the snow. We played three rounds. Ryan M. came in first playing a Fringe-only Black-sun squad. Dave M. came in second playing an Empire squad.
